Abstract
Face and Gesture recognition provides enormous benefits in the design of augmentative and alternative communication systems for the disabled. The paper describes three examples of face and gesture recognition systems developed using a design-for-all strategy. Gesture sensing devices to replace the mouse in generic PC-based applications are presented. A speech to lip conversion process is described to provide speech-reading capabilities for the hearing impaired. Brain computer interaction, by the analysis of eiectroencephalogic recordings in response to gestural movements, is introduced in the context of providing human-computer interaction for the severely disabled. Index Terms-Face and Gesture Recognition, Augmentative and Alternative Communication, Speech to Lip Conversion, Brain Computer Interfaces. Keywords
