Effect of associated growth on forms of lactic acid produced by certain bacteria

Abstract
When the lactic-acid bacteria, which produce only d- or l-acid, were grown in association with the acetone-butyl alcohol organism, Clostridium acetobutylicum, i-lactic acid was formed. It was necessary to have the bacteria in the same medium, since no effect was obtained when the 2 organisms were separated by a viscose membrane. This property of Cl. acetobutylicum seemed to be peculiar, since none of the many organisms tested caused the change in form of acid.
