Abstract
In 12 to 14 hrs. following intracerebral inoculation of allantoic fluids containing active virus of human and porcine influenza or concentrates of virus prepd. therefrom, tremors and convulsions were exhibited in 4 unrelated strains of mice. No signs were elicited from control injns. of normal allantoic fluids, sterile broth or particulate components of normal chorio-allantoic membranes. All influenza strains tested produced cerebral signs. The responsible agent behaved like influenza virus in all respects and was concentrated by the same procedures used for influenza virus. Cerebral signs were prevented by neutralizing virus prepns. with high-titered immune sera from various spp. Inactivation by u.-v., heat or formalin made the prepns. innocuous. No propagation of the virus in brain tissue was demonstrated. The agent could not be passed from one mouse brain to another. Viruses main-tamed by mouse lung passage also caused cerebral reactions. This publication has 10 references indexed in Scilit:
