Closed-Chest Cardiac Massage in the Treatment of Ventricular Fibrillation Complicating Acute Myocardial Infarction

Abstract
SUCCESSFUL resuscitation in ventricular fibrillation complicating myocardial infarction has been reported with open thoracotomy and internal cardiac massage.1 The development of an effective external cardiac defibrillator by Zoll and his associates2 obviated the necessity for thoracotomy for defibrillation. It remained for the development of the technic of closed-chest cardiac massage by Kouwenhoven et al.3 to allow for the satisfactory treatment of ventricular fibrillation without resort to thoracotomy.
