Abstract
The first observations of the third vibrational overtone of molecular hydrogen are reported. This overtone, long sought in high-pressure gaseous hydrogen studies, is important in the interpretation of some of the observed features in the spectra of outer giant planets. The observations carried out in hcp solid parahydrogen should provide the much needed incentive for increased theoretical understanding of the simplest of the molecular solids. Keywords
