The Influence of Stark Broadening on Abundance Determinations

Abstract
The contribution made by the Stark effect to line-broadening mechanisms in the solar atmosphere is considered. A programme is developed whereby the Stark contribution may be computed and subsequently, through the consequent effect on the saturation function, the influence of the Stark effect on the determination of solar atmospheric abundances is obtained. In the case of sodium 1 the Stark influence on the derived abundance can be as large as a factor of two for individual lines considered; the average effect for all lines is found to be of the order of 40%.
