Abstract
A method was devised for following quantitatively the rate of H2S production by bacteria in broth cultures. It may be applied to aerobes, facultative anaerobes, and strict anaerobes. A procedure for the determination of mercap-tans is also suggested. The various quantities of H2S produced by Proteus vulgaris from 5 commercial peptones presented respectively the following ratios 1:7:15:19:24. P. vulgaris grew better and produced H2S more rapidly from peptone under aerobic conditions than in the absence of O2. Cystin gave practically the theoretical amount of H2S in peptone inoculated with P. vulgaris. Three out of 4 authentic strains of P. vulgaris gave the same amount of H2S from peptone in 24 hours. Tests for the formation of mercaptans by P. vulgaris, Salmonella aertrycke, or Escherichia coli from peptone during a 2-day incubation were negative. This publication has 9 references indexed in Scilit:
