Abstract
Studies are reported of the temperature oscillations produced in horizontal baths of several widths containing mercury at various depths subject to a range of temperature gradients. The results are analysed to show that the frequency of oscillation is proportional to the temperature gradient raised to the power of about 0.6 in general agreement with the prediction of Gill (1974). The constant of proportionality is itself proportional to the depth of mercury. Keywords
