Lymphangiography for Malignant Diseases in Children

Abstract
This study was undertaken to evaluate lymphangiography as an aid to the correct staging of lymphomas in children by demonstrating involvement of retroperitoneal nodes. Correct staging is necessary for adequate therapy. The effect of therapy can be assessed by taking repeated scout films of the abdomen because the media is retained for 30 days or longer so that changes in node size are apparent. Two of eight children developed high temperatures and tachypnea within 24 hours after the procedure; there was x-ray evidence of infiltration of opaque matter which cleared spontaneously without therapy. The procedure has been of definite value in cases of lymphomas, but of questionable value for solid tumors. It should not be used in children with extensive pulmonary disease.
