Lipid granulomatosis of the ribs: focal Erdheim-Chester disease.

Abstract
Erdheim-Chester disease is most commonly characterized by deposition of cholesterol-laden foam cells in the bone marrow and generalized sclerosis of the long bones that spares the epiphyses and axial skeleton. Three patients are reported in whom the lesions were pathologically indistinguishable from those of Erdheim-Chester disease but were localized to the rib. Erdheim-Chester disease probably encompasses a spectrum of abnormalities that include local and widespread deposition of lipids.
