Sliding friction measurements of molecularly thin films

Abstract
Slippage behavior of Xe and Kr monolayers and bilayers adsorbed on gold substrates has been investigated by means of a quartz crystal microbalance. The experiments have been carried out for both solid and liquid layers, and also for films which solidify as the surrounding vapor pressure is increased. Measurements carried out on bilayer films indicate moderate increases in slippage for both liquid and solidfilms as the second layer condenses. Solidfilms are observed to exhibit greater slippage than liquids on smooth substrates.
