Abstract
This paper assesses the Zimbabwe government's efforts at poverty alleviation in the 1990s. Although it was once committed to reduce poverty in Zimbabwe, the various measures introduced since 1991 have either proven inadequate or failed completely. This poor record reflects the lack of interest on the part of the ruling elite, and the need to respond to societal pressures emanatingfiom those who are not among the poorest in Zimbabwe.
