Successful Tc-99m MIBI Imaging of Recurrent Hyperparathyroidism in Parathyroid Autotransplanted Patients

Abstract
Patients with hyperparathyroidism who undergo total parathyroidectomy may have parathyroid tissue autotransplantation in the forearm or sternocleidomastoid muscle. Hyperparathyroidism may recur because of hyperfunction of the transplanted parathyroid tissue or parathyroid remnant. The authors report two examples of the use of Tc-99m MIBI in the diagnostic work-up of patients with recurrent hyperparathyroidism after parathyroid autotransplantation. Tc-99m MIBI imaging demonstrated abnormal focal accumulation in the autotransplant in one case and in an ectopic gland in the mediastinum in another case.
