Abstract
The purpose of the study was to identify which effect some cognitive styles can have on the speed of verbal comprehension. These cognitive styles are: mental flexibility, field dependence-independence, perseveration and responsiveness to stimulus variation. Comprehension is assessed through a task of sentence completion followed by a task of meaning judgement. The index analysed is the subject''s response time. In the three tasks, flexible subjects are quicker than non flexible ones. The other three cognitive styles have no effect, except for responsiveness to stimulus variation in the sentence completion task: The subjects who are responsive to stimulus variation are slower than unresponsive subjects the results are discussed in terms of the characteristics of the tests used in the experiment.
