Abstract
Periodic oscillations have been observed in the laminar boundary layer of a sharp tipped, 5-degree adiabatic cone immersed in a stream of Mach no. 8. These oscillations have been photographed with a spark shadowgraph system and probed with a hot-wire anemometer. Evidence indicates that the waves are due to a hydrodynamic instability of the Tollmien-Schlichting type, active in the 2 million Reynolds no. Various factors involved are discussed.
