Abstract
The relationship between social support and divorce has been the focus of much investigation. In view of recent theoretical developments and empirical findings, this review evaluates current evidence and considers future research needs. This review is organized around three questions: (1) what is the structure and function of social networks among divorced persons, (2) what effect does social support have on the way in which men, women, and children adjust to divorce, and (3) what are the effects of support groups on divorce adjustment? Overall, this review found that much is known about the organization of network; however, there are many unresolved issues regarding how social support affects adjustment. Future research issues and methodological refinements are suggested.
