On the analysis of catch and effort data

Abstract
The Hoydal-Jones (Anon., 1982b) modification of Saville's (1981) method for the use of fishing effort data is derived from first principles. Both are shown to depend, inter alia, on the assumption that each fleet takes a constant fraction of the total catch, which may be false. It is shown that both methods are closely related to the ‘gamma-method’ of analysis, and their relative virtues are discussed, together with a suggestion for a possibly preferable hybrid method.
