Can a Cholesterol-Lowering Diet Cause Gallstones?

Abstract
Ten years ago, Dayton and his colleagues initiated a randomized double-blind trial in 846 domiciled older men, aimed at testing whether a diet high in unsaturated fat would decrease the incidence of complications of atherosclerosis.1 A "control" group was instructed to eat meals containing chiefly animal fat. An "experimental" group ate similar meals in which 2/3 of the animal fat was replaced by vegetable fat. The number of meals eaten by each participant was recorded.
