Abstract
A drastic reduction in the plasma cholesterol concn. of 15 rats was effected by subjecting the animals to plasmapheresis, resuspending the red cells in Krebs-Ringer-bicarbonate-human albumin soln. before reinjn. into the rat. Immediately following this procedure 9 of the rats were partially hepatectomized (60% removal), while the remaining 6 animals underwent splenectomy and unilateral nephrectomy. Restoration of plasma cholesterol was found to, be inhibited or prevented for 24 hrs. following partial hepatectomy, while cholesterol level was fully restored in this time by the control animals. Maintenance of the plasma cholesterol content is a normal function of the liver. Keywords
