Abstract
Thin sections and fresh preparations of the female and male Dendroctonus adjunctus Blandford prothorax revealed a well-developed mycangium in the female and a pseudomycangium in the male. Two types of gland cells were associated with the mycangium: a cell with an efferent cuticular tubule previously unreported with mycangia but similar to Tenebrionidae defensive gland cells, and a columnar cell found previously with other mycangia. The structure and location of the 1st type suggest it may regulate fungus species composition in the mycangium. Fungi were growing in sectioned mycangia but not in the pseudomycangia. Sixty percent of the female mycangia contained a Verticicladiella sp. near huntii, but it was not associated with pseudomycangia. Penicillium decumbens, P. spinulosum, and yeasts were associated with both females and males. Keywords
