Abstract
A 1977 nationwide survey of preferred recreation activities in New Zealand indicated that only New Zealand males were consistently active in sport, while women preferred home based activities. Data on a group of women who are actively and regularly involved in a specific sport in New Zealand (orienteering) are presented to illustrate characteristics of their participation and to highlight contrasts with women's sport participation elsewhere. The predominant age group was found to be unusual for female sports participants, although their socioeconomic status was consistent with other similar research findings. Immediate social circles of friends and family appear to be most influential with regard to this leisure activity, however enjoyment comes predominantly from more intrinsic aspects of the sport. Keywords
