Abstract
A newly constructed modified Bunsen calorimeter is capable of measuring the heat of solution of slowly dissolving materials. Its construction, operating characteristics, and the results of an electrical calibration are discussed. Quantities of heat up to 1000 cal can be measured with a reproducibility of ±0.2% for reactions taking as long as 90 min. The heat of solution of ZnO in a hydrofluoric‐nitric acid mixture was measured to check its performance. The value obtained, −257.83±0.26 cal/g, is in agreement with the value reported in the literature.
