Abstract
One-hundred hard-of-hearing school children were selected from public schools on the basis of information contained in school records, with speech reception thresholds between 20 and 65 decibels in each ear, between 7 and 17 years of age, and whose I. Q. scores were from 80 to 120. Various functional hearing tests were administered when necessary, and cases were rejected when a functional overlay of 5 dB or more was found to be present. Hearing aids were worn by 35 of the children. Two months later the investigator administered a series of mental tests and achievement ratings. Each child received one standardized educational achievement test. The mean achievement of the total sample was the 3.84 grade, with a mean grade placement of 4.8 years. Theoretical placement should have been 6.08 years. Keywords
