Abstract
Attempts were made to stimulate a powerful degree of immunity to Schistosoma mansoni by subjecting mice to large (and sometimes repeated) infections, which were then either suppressed by chemo-prophylaxis or terminated by chemotherapy prior to opposition. Evaluation of the severity of the lesions in immunized and nonim-munized mice did not indicate any major reduction in the number or fecundity of the challenge worms. In one experiment there was some evidence that a single infection of 500 cercariae per mouse, allowed to develop for 24 days, slightly prolonged survival of the mice following challenge. In three experiments, mice exposed to six heavy infections, none of which was allowed to develop for more than 28 days, lived longer after massive challenge than did mice not previously exposed. Keywords
