Abstract
Data from a timber inventory of western Oregon were analyzed to test whether interpretation of photos with a scale of 1:63.000 could be used to improve efficiency of timber volume estimates. When photo plots classified on this scale were used to stratify a field sample, the resulting double-sample design provided estimates of total cubic-foot volume with twice the efficiency of a simple field-plot survey--i.e., precision was improved without an increase in cost. Results were similar to those obtained from an earlier study testing interpretation on 1:12,000 to 1:20,000 scale photos.
