Abstract
Anemia Due to Bone-Marrow DisturbancesAnemia due to a disturbance in the bone marrow is usually normochromic (normal color index) and normocytic (normal cell volume and normal cell diameter) because what red cells are produced by the more or less incapacitated marrow are normal from the standpoints of hemoglobin content and cell size. Leukopenia and thrombocytopenia are usually associated phenomena; in other words, there is a pancytopenia.The presence of pancytopenia — anemia, leukopenia, granulocytopenia and thrombocytopenia —should at once lead to the suspicion that a condition involving the bone marrow is present.
