Abstract
PUBLIC attention was focused on the use of anabolic–androgenic steroids by the disqualification of Ben Johnson, winner of the gold medal for the 100-meter dash in the 1988 Olympic Games. Johnson recently acknowledged that he took anabolic–androgenic steroids regularly as part of his training regimen.1 As a result, his world record for the 100-meter dash was recently disallowed by the International Amateur Athletic Federation.2 The action is unusual because Johnson's record was revoked solely on the basis of his statement; he passed the drug test that was administered immediately after the race.
