Abstract
To demonstrate the Coast Salish economic position, use is made of city directory employment data for samples of Indians and neighbouring low income non-Indians. Since the Indians, even while superficially occupying the same economic niche as non-Indians, are shown to have a lower economic standing, the data appear to support the metropolis-satellite model of politicoeconomic organization. Variables framed according to the acculturation model have no significant effect on Indian employment.
