Abstract
An experimental procedure is described for the calibration of a chromatographic system using two precision positive displacement pumps for the preparation of known mixtures. In particular, the calibration of a chromatographic column and thermal conductivity detector for the system methane-carbon dioxide is described in detail. The known mixtures of CO2-CH4 were prepared using a 500 cm3 capacity pump to deliver one component and a 100 cm3 capacity pump to deliver the other. The two streams were mixed, and the resulting mixture was switched onto a chromatographic column for analysis. With this method, a calibration curve was prepared from 0.02 to 0.997 mole fraction CH4 with an accuracy of approximately 1% of the mole fraction ratio xCH4/xCO2, or 0.0002 mole fraction of the lesser component, whichever error is greater.
