A modified fuel cell for the analysis of oxygen concentration of gases.

Abstract
A solid oxide fuel-cell oxygen gauge (Westinghouse model 203C) has been modified to improve output stability and to provide more efficient sample gas transport with shorter response times. Conversion of the logarithmic output of the cell to a more convenient linear output has been achieved. Evaluation of the modified instrument by comparison with Scholander analyses indicates a mean difference between the two methods of .008 vol% with a standard deviation of .015 vol%. The instrument is linear over a range of oxygen concentrations from 1.0 to 99.6% O2. The fuel cell provides continuous or single-breath analysis with a 0-90% response time of 0.20 sec. The instrument which is small in size, simple to use, and capable of continuous and accurate analysis should prove of considerable value in physiological investigations.
