STUDIES ON THE BIOASSAY OF HORMONES THE RELATIVE REACTIVITY OF THE COMB OF VARIOUS BREEDS OF CHICKS TO ANDROGENS1

Abstract
To the combs of White Leghorn, Rhode Island Red and Barred Rock chicks, testosterone propionate in oil was administered once daily for 7 days. The dosage range for the White Leghorns was 2-20,480 [gamma] and for the other 2 breeds was 40-20,480 [gamma]. The White Leghorn comb is the most reactive when evaluated by any of the 3 criteria: 1. The minimal amt. of hormone necessary to produce a statistically significant increment in comb wt.; 2. The amts. necessary to produce a certain arbitrary slope of response on a log dose-response basis; and 3. The maximum attainable slope or response calculated as a log dose-response relationship. Possible factors for the differences in comb responses are postulated.
