Abstract
In Southwark PCT patient power is more than a policy handed down from Whitehall. The Southwark diabetes patient participation group meets monthly at Peckham Pulse healthy living centre. The patients choose a topic for the meeting, e.g. diet, eye screening, medication, and a professional is invited to speak. Speakers do not prepare presentations; instead they respond to the questions patients ask during the meeting. If the speaker is unable to answer, he/she investigates the question later and sends the answer to all participants with the notes of the meeting. The discussion, on such topics as interactions between diabetic medications and complementary therapies, benefits health professionals as well as patients.
