Abstract
A simple, rapid and sensitive kinetic-square wave voltammetric method for the determination of trace amounts of formaldehyde (0.37–1.48 μg ml−1) based on its catalytic effect on the oxidation reaction of toluidine blue by bromate ion in acidic media at 30°C is reported. The decrease in height of the square wave voltammogram of toluidine blue in an acidic solution in the potential range of 0.02–0.2 volt (vs. Ag/AgCl) is used for monitoring the reaction. The detection limit is 68 ng ml−1 and the relative standard deviation of ten replicate determination of 0.74 g ml−1 of formaldehyde is 1.7%. No elimination of soluble oxygen in the sample solution or stopping the reaction is required.
