Studies on Coal Slurry Fuel. (Part 2). Rapid Determination Method for the Dispersant of Coal Water Mixture(CWM).

Abstract
A new rapid method for the determination of dispersant of coal water mixture (CWM) was developed by use of an ion selective electrode (ISE) based on a lipophilic diphosphonium salt. A trace amount of the dispersant (naphthalenesulfonate-formaldehyde condensate) in aqueous solutions could be accurately determined in the systems, in the presence of heavy concentration of coal particles, such as those of CWM. Neither chromatography nor spectrophotofluorometry gave such an accurate determination. The static stability of CWMs prepared from various coals was evaluated by "rod penetration test". Moreover, the static stability and fluidity of CWM, which tended to be dependent on the amount of dispersant remaining in the aqueous phase of CWMs after equilibrium, are discussed on basis of analysis of the dispersant in CWM by ISE.
