STUDIES OF DISTAL COLONIC MOTILITY IN CHILDREN

Abstract
Three patients with fecal impaction and soiling are described. In each a short area of achalasia proximal to the anus was demonstrable by motility studies. Surgical resection of the achalasic segment resulted in improvement in all, although ganglia could be demonstrated in this segment in each child. The relationship of this syndrome to congenital aganglionic megacolon and to psychogenic obstipation is discussed.
