Four Propositions for Quality Management of Design Organizations

Abstract
A lot of emphasis today is being placed on quality management of design organizations through restructuring of management philosophy. This paper offers suggestions on how to proceed if such is not the “best step” for an organization. This is discussed in terms of McGregor's theory‐X–theory‐Y management styles. The four propositions for practical quality management may relate particularly to the middle manager caught in the pull of crosscurrents and conflicting demands. The constraints may be internal inertia due to organizational culture or management styles that are judged to have produced success. The constraints may also be actions and attitudes that are set by the client/customer/superior. For such real‐life situations, the fourth proposition presents some fundamental guidelines that should, nevertheless, be present in any quality management program, even if constraints prevent the organization from implementing all the best practices recommended by experts.
