Abstract
Soil samples which were collected nationwide for contamination analysis following the Chernobyl accident were also measured for natural isotopes including 40K, the thorium series, 238U-234U and 226Ra. The results are presented and show above global average uranium concentrations with radium enhancement in many Irish soils. Relevant geological information is presented. 226Ra values up to 200 Bq.kg-1 were found in western areas and these correspond to some areas with high radon conentrations in houses. Calculated dose values are compared with direct readings from an earlier survey. Keywords
