Abstract
Ninety-six species of bacteria from 38 genera and 11 families were screened for lysine racemase activity. Racemization of lysine was catalyzed by 2 Escherichia species (E. anlndolica and E. freundii) and 8 Proteus species (P. ammoniae, P. americanus, P. inconstans, P. mirabilis, P. paraamericanus, P. rettgeri, P. sphingidis, and P. vulgaris). P. vulgaris, which catalyzes lysine racemizatlon, contains no racemase for glutamic acid and methionine, but may have a trace of activity for alanine. Keywords
