Abstract
Presentation of CaseA 44-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of respiratory failure.She was well until 19 months earlier, when a mass was noted in the right breast. Evaluation elsewhere revealed that the mass was an abscess. An x-ray film of the chest (Fig. 1) showed a reticular pattern consistent with sarcoidosis. A specimen of arterial blood, drawn while the patient was breathing room air, demonstrated that the partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) was 75 mm Hg, and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) 31 mm Hg.
