Abstract
Intrathoracic extramedullary hematopoiesis is a rare cause of a paravertebral mediastinal mass. A review of the literature disclosed 12 cases of intrathoracic extramedullary hematopoiesis recorded to date. This is the first report of a case in a patient with homo-zygous sickle-cell anemia. All cases with the exception of one of myelo-lipoma were associated with an anemia. Extramedullary hematopoiesis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a posterior mediastinal mass, particularly in a patient with an anemia. Keywords
