A new formulation of load flow equations in balanced radial distribution systems

Abstract
A new formulation of load flow equations in a balanced three-phase distribution system is developed. Voltage magnitudes and real and reactive power losses in the series are chosen as variables, and Newton's method is applied for the solution of the set of equations. Computer implementation of the formulation is presented. The convergence characteristics are found to be good, and results for a representative system are included. Advantages and drawbacks of the algorithm are discussed.
