Abstract
It is observed that in sol-gel derived oxide systems, chemical processes lead to the formation of photoluminescent centers analogous to those produced by neutron or γ-irradiation of oxide crystals, fused silica, and other glasses. The initial observations about the phenomenon and its proposed mechanism are reported here. Keywords
