New Brownmillerite Solid Electrolytes

Abstract
A series of new brownmillerite solid electrolytes of composition have been synthesized and incorporated into small laboratory fuel cells. Ionic conductivities for both the phases were measured and conductivities up to at 600°C were observed. An activation energy for ionic conduction of 0.35 eV was measured for the phase. This value for the activation energy is unusually low relative to a comparison with the ionic conductivity for this phase and also when compared to the activation energies of similar compounds. These observations support the premise that brownmillerite solid electrolyte phases have potential for achieving high ionic conductivity.
