Abstract
The activity of the red blood cell extract required for the growth of Bad. tularense is destroyed by heating at 120[degree]C for 1 hour in 0.08 [image] NaOH, but not by similar treatment with 0.08 [image] HC1. The activity removed by the alkali treatment may be completely restored by addition of thiamine. Optimal activity is obtained at a lower level of red blood cell extract with added thiamine. Attempts to substitute for the alkali stable fraction with growth factors that were alkali-stable or have alkali stable components of known activity were unsuccessful. Keywords
