Abstract
Maternal and fetal plasma bupivacaine concentrations were assayed following segmental epidural analgesia during the 1st stage of 14 normal labors. Analgesia was accomplished with 20 mg of 0.5% bupivacaine. Mothers (10) received only 1 dose and 4 mothers 2 doses. The maternal and fetal plasma bupivacaine levels remained very low and the fetomaternal ratios were about 1:4 during the labor. At delivery, the feto-maternal ratio increased, showing that the decline of bupivacaine concentrations is slower in fetal than in maternal plasma. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
