Control of the Cotton Aphid and Cotton Leafworm with Phosphorus Insecticides1

Abstract
Malathion applied at 0.75 lb., Shell OS-2046 at 0.375 lb., and Bayer 17147 at 0.25 and 0.375 lb. per acre in field-plot experiments were as effective against Aphis gossypii as demeton at 0.25 lb when reinfestation did not occur. There was no appreciable difference in control obtained with 0.25 lb. acre dosages of parathion, Shell OS-2046 and Bayer 17147 for 1 week. Reinfestation 2 weeks after treatment was greater following 17147 and OS-2046 than after parathion. The following acre dosages of various insecticides were equally effective against Alabama argillacea 2 days after treatment: Endrin, 0.3 lb.; chlorthion, 0.375 lb.; malathion, 0.25 lb.; parathion, 0.25 lb.; and toxaphene, 3 lb. In another experiment complete kill of larvae 1 day after treatment was obtained with 0.25-lb. acre dosages of parathion, malathion, Shell OS-2046 and Bayer 17147, and with 0.375 lb. of the last material. Residual control 13 days after treatment continued to be fair with parathion and 0.375 lb. of 17147, but malathion and OS-2046 were ineffective.
