Oxygen as a Product of Water Radiolysis in High-LET Tracks. I. The Origin of the Hydroperoxyl Radical in Water Radiolysis

Abstract
Experiments for determining the yield of O2 from dilute aqueous solutions of Fe2+ with and without added Cu2+ following irradiation with heavy ions are described. It is postulated that O2 is the precursor of the hydroperoxyl radical, HO2, which is formed in reactions which take place in the core of the track. Calculations taking account of the diffusion of the species initially formed in the track core are presented to test this proposal.
