Abstract
Rudimentary muscle of palmar fascia was found in 14 of 30 normal hands. Similar though hyperplastic muscle was detected in 27 of 35 surgically resected nodular masses of palmar fascia removed from Dupuytren's contracture hands. This muscle had undergone varying degrees of fibrosis and hyalinization. We believe that hyperplastic rudimentary muscle is an inheritable recessive which because of injurious trauma or disease undergoes progressive nodular fibrosis and contraction resulting in the clinical picture of Dupuytren's contracture. Keywords
