Abstract
Aliphatic α,ω-diamines have been reacted with α,ω-dicarboxylic acids to form 1:1 salts. Depending on the lengths of the alkyl segments of each moiety, the salts may be liquid crystalline. The observed mesophase is smectic A. A structural model is discussed which involves aggregation into distinct ionic and hydrocarbon regions. Keywords
