Abstract
The post-Eocene sediment record of Site 366, eastern equatorial Atlantic, provides important information about the evolution of paleoenvironments at the Sierra Leone Rise, which changed in response to the continuous northward drift of the African plate and the history of African climate. Changes in the accumulation of biogenic opal and the composition of the terrigenous sediment fraction clearly reflect the motion of Site 366 from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere during Oligocene/Miocene times. Distinct maxima of eolian sediment supply and coarser grain-sizes suggest development of an intensified meridional wind circulation and a more arid to semi-arid climate in the South Saharan and Sahelian regions towards the end of the Miocene between 6 and 5 Ma and during the last 2.5 Ma.This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
